I'm notoriously re-creating myself: looking at myself from an outside perspective & checking inside if it matches who I am. I've learned to look at my past decisions with compassion: being able to accept the mistakes I've made - cringe worthy moments and all. In the past, my first instinct was hide away; to feel shame. But that was no better than building bars to my own prison. The truth is, those experiences are nothing for which to feel shame. They were gifts that would lead to wisdom, and now I have gratitude for them. Through them I have become stronger and more resilient. I have learned - and truly learning is no easy feat. I now practice looking at my past self as would a child: not with judgement, but with love - and often a laugh. Still, I am always changing, always becoming. I'm a hopeless romantic. I believe in love notes & hand holding & drawn-out goodbyes. I believe love songs are made to be sung to the people we write them for & poems recited as nervous as we are. I think this life is meant to be lived passionately. I think 'I can't stop thinking about you's' and coffee foam hearts and long kisses are on the other side of stubborn and afraid. I refuse to believe chivalry is dead & romance is waiting with flowers & messy kisses when we pursue it. We may live in a mixed up generation where gender norms and conventions & the rest of it all seems really confusing & absurd, but my heart aches for old fashioned. I'd like to wake up in a bedroom that has French windows so big the sun shines through at every time of the day. I'd like tall ceilings so that I can think, ivory walls to cover in art, and a bed that I can stretch out on in every direction. I'd like a balcony where I can paint every morning with just my tea and undies. And I'd like a view, of something really beautiful, maybe the mountains or the sea or the city below me. The sunshine helps me think, and this is what I'm thinking -- art is a space where we can finally experience the intimacy that we all crave, the knowing of another and the power in empathy. Through an emotional song or vulnerable image, we find solace in another human soul disclosing their most intimate experiences. The artist lets the brightest part of the day expose their heart, the sunshine light their vulnerability, the wind brush away what we try to hide.
