Traveling a few months ago in Brazil was a real life lesson for me. This incredible country has much poverty, violence, and suffering, but it doesn’t forget to smile, to dance, to be kind and warm-hearted, even in the most difficult moments, like the economic crisis that followed the boom years. Suelem was born in a Rio de Janeiro favela, then sent to live with her aunt in São Paulo to escape the poverty. She moved back in Rio and now works hard seven days a week in an accessories shop hoping for a better future. For more portraits and stories please order The Atlas of Beauty book. For any book the first days of life are decisive so I would be very grateful if you decide to order today. Link in bio.

I met Alice a few days ago on the streets of Timisoara, Romania where she was celebrating her high school graduation. She told me that the first years of school were terrible because of some bullies from her class. “You’re stupid” was the most common insult that she heard. She didn’t have self-esteem, she couldn’t focus on learning and her marks were really bad. After she started to ignore the bullies, her marks improved spectacularly and this year she was among the first at the National Mathematical Olympiad. I think most of the times, succeeding is more about confidence than about talent. We are all gifted in one way or another. We just have to see ourselves as we are, not as others tell us we are. #TheAtlasOfBeauty #Romania #Timisoara #AroundTheWorld #Graduation

I met Ayça two days ago, on the streets of Izmir, Turkey, where she was visiting her relatives. While walking along the sea, she told me a bit about the history of her family. Back in the 60's, her grandfather was considered the first Turkish immigrant worker in Germany. In 1970 the German President invited him to the New Year's Reception of the German Chancellor to honour him for that. Exactly 40 years later, Ayça's father was also invited by the German President to the New Year's Reception. He was honoured as a perfect example for integration and naturalisation. Although he came to Germany as a worker’s son without any German language skills, he studied medicine, worked hard and became a successful ophthalmological surgeon. Ayça feels both German and Turkish and she's a wonderful example about how you can integrate in a new society while also celebrating your origins. Now she studies health economics in Germany and her goal is to work in an aid organisation and help people in need from around the world. #Turkey #TheAtlasOfBeauty #AroundTheWorld
