Miss America stopt met de bikinironde, dus tijd om oude beelden te bekijken

Bijna honderd jaar geleden begon men met de Miss Amerika verkiezingen. De mooiste dames van het land gingen de strijd met elkaar aan om verkozen te worden tot de best of the best. 

Afgelopen december vond er een schandaal plaats binnen de kringen van Miss America. Personeelsleden spraken in verscheidene mails denigrerend over de deelnemers en maakten grappen over de intilligentie, het uiterlijk en de sekslevens van verschillende misses. Die mails kwamen in de openbaarheid terecht en nu zit er een nieuw management achter het jaarlijkse evenement.

En dat management heeft een uitgesproken mening over de welbekende bikinironde waarin de kandidaten trots hun lichaam tonen. Van origine is Miss Ameirca een bikini/badpakken-competitie maar de organisatie zegt nu dat de vrouwen niet langer op hun uiterlijk beoordeeld zullen worden. Velen spreken op sociale media van politieke correctheid en dat het allemaal veel te ver gaat tegenwoordig. 

Gretchen Carlson, een van de nieuwe eindbazen binnen de organisatie, geeft aan dat de bikinironde niet de best bekeken ronde is en dat het iedereen om het talent gaat. 'We zijn alleen nog maar geïnteresseerd in wat er uit hun mond komt.,' voegt ze eraan toe. Schoonheid was altijd slechts één van de vijf onderdelen waarop de deelnemers beoordeeld werden, maar dat gaat tegenwoordig zonder bikini. Het is niet anders heren.

De volgende Miss Verkiezing begint negen september, zonder bikini's dus. Om toch even te genieten nog van voorbijgaande jaren nemen we toch even een kijkje naar de voormalig winnaars en kandidaten.

No more swimsuits! No more evening gowns! Instead, #MissAmerica contestants will be asked to wear attire that makes them feel confident and expresses their personal style.

| ?? | I’ve had a lot of time to gather my thoughts and figured I’d share my opinion with anyone who’s interested in reading ✨ I think that the new change Miss America announced today has done nothing but feed into the stereotype that pageants have constantly tried to prove wrong. I’ve read countless posts today from former contestants (both Miss USA and Miss America) saying they’ve never felt more confident during this segment, that it encouraged and motivated them to live a healthier lifestyle. So who did they really please with this change? The people who sit on their couch, turn on the pageant for a few minutes and create those steroeotypes we all hear, without even knowing what the organization stands for? If you need to remove a part of your competition that’s been around 90+ years and has made countless women feel more confident in themselves, to “prove” that you’re inclusive, then were you really doing a good enough job showcasing what your organization stood for to begin with? Will removing the swimsuit competition really help? No. The stigma will always be there. Does that mean it’s true? Not at all. I think pageants have proved that year after year. We had a Miss USA who was in the military and a Miss USA who was a scientist, yet people STILL make those judgements. Stop trying to please the people who will never like pageantry, people who associate beauty with being dumb and people who still think women can’t have both beauty and brains #MissUniverse #MissUSA #MissAmerica

When I look at this picture I feel beautiful, confident, empowered, capable, strong, and proud to show how dedication and hard work pay off. • As of today, I am a part of the last group of contestants to receive a swimsuit preliminary award at Miss America and although that part of the competition is gone I feel it should be honored and remembered for how great it was. • The swimsuit portion of the competition changed my life. I have never felt so comfortable in my own body and never been more confident. Competing in swimsuit inspired me to work hard and make healthier life choices and I am physically and mentally stronger because of it. • The swimsuit competition is not about how big or small someone is or objectifying women. It is about women who are bold, empowered, dedicated, and not afraid to serve a huge helping of beauty along with their brains because no one should ever be ashamed of or condemned for their beauty (which is whatever YOU personally define it to be). • To all those involved with the Miss America Organization, I encourage you to keep the swimsuit competition’s aspects of self-confidence, discipline, and commitment to a healthy lifestyle alive and to continue to leave a legacy of beautiful AND intelligent women. #missamerica #swimsuit #strongandempowered
